About
About Weave & Loom
An independent, educational reference for weaving and cloth making. No products, no advertising, no brand relationships.
Why this exists
Weaving is taught in fragments. A sett table lives in one book, a draft notation in another, a shrinkage figure in a forum post, and the safety advice nowhere at all. This site puts the numbers and the reasons next to each other, so a weaver can plan a warp and understand why it works before spending a day on it.
What is here
- 28 tool and material entries across five families, each with specifications, technical parameters, safety notes and compatible items.
- Four 3D simulators that run in the browser: a loom simulator, a pattern designer, a dye colour simulator and a warp planner.
- Three calculators for sett, ends and yarn quantity, with the working shown.
- A fabric and weave database of 18 cloths with sett, picks, weight and price, sortable and comparable.
- Ten articles on looms, fibres, warping, structure, drafts, dyeing, finishing, safety and studio set-up.
How the numbers were chosen
Sett, count, elasticity and shrinkage figures are typical published ranges for each class of yarn or cloth, drawn from standard weaving references and sett tables. They are deliberately given as ranges rather than single values, because a yarn is not a specification: two 8/2 wools from different spinners behave differently on the same loom.
That is why every calculator here tells you to sample. The tool gives you a defensible starting point and shows its working; the sample tells you the truth.
What this site is not
It is not a shop. Nothing is for sale, no product is linked for commission, and no manufacturer has any input into what is written. It is also not professional, medical or safety advice, and it does not guarantee that a sett, a dye recipe or a cloth will come out as predicted.
Accessibility and performance
The 3D tools load their rendering library only when you open a studio page — the rest of the site never downloads it. Every 3D tool has a 2D fallback that keeps the full calculation, rendering pauses when a tab is hidden, quality steps down if the frame rate drops, and reduced-motion is respected throughout. There are no third-party scripts, no analytics and no external font or asset requests.
