How this works

  • The margin covers take-up, loom waste, broken ends, sampling and the mistakes you have not made yet. Fifteen per cent is the usual working figure.
  • If you are dyeing your own yarn, buy the whole quantity in one lot: two dye baths never match exactly, and the difference shows as a band in the cloth.
  • A skein count is always rounded up. Half a skein short is a stopped project.

Before you commit a warp

Every figure here is an estimate from published sett and count tables. Yarn varies between dye lots, spinners and fibres, so sample first. A sett that is too dense will abrade the warp and snap ends under tension; a sett that is too open will give a sleazy cloth that will not wear.

Loom waste and take-up are the two numbers people under-estimate most. Add 40–60 cm of waste on a small loom and 12 % or more for take-up.
