How this works
- Warp length is the finished length grossed up for take-up and shrinkage, plus loom waste. Under-estimate the waste and the last thirty centimetres are unusable.
- Yarn mass uses the Nm count: a 8/1 Nm yarn is 8 metres per gram, so a 2 000 m warp needs about 250 g before allowance.
- Weft mass assumes the weft crosses the full warp width plus a small selvedge allowance on every pick.
Before you commit a warp
Every figure here is an estimate from published sett and count tables. Yarn varies between dye lots, spinners and fibres, so sample first. A sett that is too dense will abrade the warp and snap ends under tension; a sett that is too open will give a sleazy cloth that will not wear.
Loom waste and take-up are the two numbers people under-estimate most. Add 40–60 cm of waste on a small loom and 12 % or more for take-up.
