How this works
- The suggestion is a starting point derived from published sett tables, not a rule. Every yarn behaves a little differently — sample first.
- The target hand slider moves the sett between about 70 % and 130 % of the mid-point: lower is sleazier and drapier, higher is firmer and more wind-resistant.
- A sett that needs more ends per dent than 4 is usually a sign that the reed is too coarse for the yarn.
Before you commit a warp
Every figure here is an estimate from published sett and count tables. Yarn varies between dye lots, spinners and fibres, so sample first. A sett that is too dense will abrade the warp and snap ends under tension; a sett that is too open will give a sleazy cloth that will not wear.
Loom waste and take-up are the two numbers people under-estimate most. Add 40–60 cm of waste on a small loom and 12 % or more for take-up.
Estimate only. These calculators model published behaviour so you can plan a warp with the working shown. They are not a guarantee of sett, shrinkage or quantity, and they do not replace sampling your own yarn on your own loom.
